The gift is an abstract representation of the building designed by architect Philippe Samyn in which the European council resides. In the middle of the object the shape of a lantern has been carved out which is the defining feature of the building. The lantern is then surrounded by a pattern that has been engraved on the edges which references the recycled window frames gathered from across the EU that were used for the facade of the building.

The polished steel ball symbolizes the member state representatives within the Council who are a reflection of the European citizens. This sphere is being held in place at the heart of the lantern by a brass structure. For this, the visual language of navigational and astronomical instruments was used to convey the role the Council holds as a guiding and orienting institution.
